But the good news is it is on time and on budget and guaranteed for 30 years!

The taxpayers of Saskatchewan should
be relieved to know that the outdated, seriously flawed, dysfunctional, unsafe,
developer influenced, dead end, 2 billion dollar Regina Bypass is on time and on
budget!

In case you didn’t know, part of the newly built bypass is sinking. Yep. You read that right. Work is being planned right now to repair the sinking systems interchange off Tower Road. This is the latest development in the Regina Bypass fiasco, and not to sound like a broken record or anything, but we kind of told everyone that this was a bad idea! And not just us, but a bunch of other really smart people – the kind with degrees that matter –  said the exact same things, gave the exact same warnings and cautions, and yet still, this bullshit excuse for a development project got the green light …

I don’t suppose I need to remind anyone that back when this was all still just a bad idea, the projected cost exploded from 400 million dollars to over 2 billion dollars when it was moved 400 meters east of Tower Road? Of course in the time it took to get from there to here, we’ve had to deal with all sorts of interesting additions, changes, subtractions, retractions, reversals and redesigns to the plan, and now this bullshit version of a bypass project is sinking …

But remember, this isn’t even the worst of it! No, the sinking bypass problem is just the latest in a string of needless blunders. The very decision to make this project happen impacted thousands and saw people loose their land, homes, businesses, a ball park, access, health, histories and futures.

And yet the question remains; why did the government approve building
an outdated, seriously flawed, dysfunctional, unsafe, 2 billion dollar, developer
influenced, dead end Regina Bypass off Tower Road after land developers
purchased land in 2012?

Why did the government hire a Vinci, a company from France
– and one already rumoured to be involved in scandals in Europe with money laundering, bribery and
human rights issues – to build the Regina Bypass?

Very few Saskatchewan companies have received work from the project which has resulted in many companies now laying off workers and going out of business. Meanwhile, the government is in the midst
of a land scandal cover-up where developers flipped land and in some cases received up to
80 times more than other landowners in the same area.

But hey, despite all that, the good thing is that the Regina Bypass is on time and on budget and is guaranteed for 30 years! And in 30 years the Bypass contractor will hand the Bypass back to the Province and it will be like new! Well that is quite a relief seeing as how before they are even finished they have to start renovations and reconstruction to their ‘fantastic new development’ that is currently, literally, sinking! This dysfunctional bullshit Bypass has wasted over $2 billion dollars of taxpayers’ money, and that has destroyed our economy for the next decade at bare minimum. Most taxpayers are hopeful that the 1.2 BILLION dollars about to be spent on the bypass will do just that, however, given that the bypass is not expected by the City of Regina to function as a bypass at all, but as a new Ring Road, commuters and truckers alike will likely be disappointed by the East Regina bypass.

If the purpose of the Bypass was to provide a 50 year solution to the traffic congestion, putting the Bypass within current city limits is short-sighted at best.

The proposed location near Tower Road does not allow for a future northern connection, as current developments in the area preclude easy access.

Taken directly from our old website, whytowerroad.net, these are exactly the things we were talking about at the inception point of this group. Fast forward to the present and this prediction is becoming painfully true with new reports indicating that this solution, might not be the solution we were looking for.

We’ve been wondering that ourselves for years! It’s not everyday you find yourself literally in the path of a giant infrastructure development! And then to find out that it bears all the hallmarks of a scandal? To say that we are feeling a little like Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole would be both accurate, and an understatement.

In the beginning, this became an issue for the founders of our group when they realized the possibility for personal upheaval created by the newly minted bypass plan. Simply put, the highway ran right through the middle of their property. Property which was about to be used for a business expansion, that in turn was to be the culmination of more than 40 years of effort. With their life’s work hanging in the balance, the Mryglod brothers began fighting an impossible fight. They would try to change the course of Regina’s history forever … and change it, they did!

Thanks to their dedication to this cause, the public began to criticize the government for it’s decisions regarding the bypass. Thanks to those efforts, this association was formed, people began to speak up, and the youth began to pay attention. But when our group realized the actual fight we were in, it made the hairs on the back of our necks stand up; the real danger was never just the bypass route … the real danger was the precedent being set.

Don’t kid yourself; this isn’t some fellows unfortunate sob story; this is a story about precedent.

With this deal, our provincial government has set a dangerous precedent wherein which the leaders of our Great Province can utilize the powers of eminent domain in a very broad-brush fashion. Oh yeah, and they now know they can write pretty sizeable cheques, without feeling much public backlash – or public calls to be transparent – about said sizeable cheques!

To some people, this story may not matter and that’s OK! Not everyone is built for this stuff! But some folks are, and it’s to those people that we would say ‘Join Us!’ Help us in our fight to keep our Saskatchewan government accountable. For us, this is merely the beginning; an inception point, if you will. There are many more miles to go before we reach our goal, and trust me, we’ve only just begun

These are the stories of century old homesteads plowed through to make room for a poorly conceived, poorly designed highway bypass that bypasses nothing more than transparency and accountability. Many of us have been negatively impacted by the decision to locate the Regina Bypass along Tower Toad and the GTH, and we have come together to tell our stories.

Our newly developed name, Highway Robbery, is very appropriate on many levels especially given all the cuts by the Wall government that are impacting our great province.
